Learning Opportunities

Staff Learning

Getting Started
Staff members begin learning their first day on the job and are encouraged to continue learning as long as they are employed with the Good Samaritan Society.  New employees will begin with General Orientation and Department Orientation to learn about the broader organization as well as the specific requirements for their position.

Ongoing Learning and Development
For ongoing licensure renewal and to maintain optimal skill levels in their work, employees are encouraged to take advantage of learning opportunities available to them.  In-service education is provided at the center level to address topics required for excellence in long-term care.  Learning paths, which list competencies associated with a particular job description, have been developed for several key positions within the Good Samaritan Society, and will eventually be available for all positions.  Conferences and workshops are available to increase knowledge and skills and to share expertise within several disciplines.  Leadership and management training has been developed to enhance the ability to lead well.  In addition to these formal learning opportunities, mentoring relationships play a significant role in sharing knowledge among staff members.

Because many employees within the Society are licensed, a significant number of staff learning opportunities include continuing education.  Continuing education hours toward licensure renewal are currently available through many learning activities for administrators, nurses, social workers, activity professionals and dietary professionals.

In these challenging times, learning is critical to the success of Good Samaritan and to each member of the Good Samaritan staff.  Staff members are encouraged to enhance their knowledge, skills and perspectives by 1) learning through direct involvement in the living tradition of the Good Samaritan family; 2) participating in targeted education and training; 3) engaging in continuous improvement activities through which processes and systems are improved; and 4) learning from each other.

Professional Career Preparation and Advancement
Employees of the Good Samaritan Society have a unique opportunity to continue to grow in their careers by selecting educational options in clinical and non-clinical tracks.  These options may begin with basic nurse aid training, advanced CNA programs, licensed practical nursing and registered nursing degree programs, management certificate programs (for nurses and other managers) as well as advanced degrees in health care management and nursing.
