Learning Opportunities

Learning opportunities are made available in many ways at the Good Samaritan Society.

Mentoring is encouraged both informally and formally to take advantage of the knowledge and skills that our veteran employees bring to the workplace.  While informal mentor relationships exist in several areas of the organization, formal mentor relationships are specifically designed in front-line roles such as Certified Nursing Assistants, and in leadership roles such as our Administrator-in-Training program.

Communities of Practice within The Evangelical Lutheran Good Samaritan Society are a method of sharing and communicating current practices, learning about best practices and identifying new practices to try.  A Community of Practice is a group of Society employees who have similar responsibilities or share a common interest and who have a strong desire to learn from each other.  Communities of Practice within our organization are formed and fostered in order to improve the way people do their jobs or to improve a process or procedure.

The Resource Library based at our National Campus makes resources related to long-term care readily available for center learning activities. The Library has a fully searchable online catalog to help users locate resources quickly and efficiently, and resources are available to be checked out by staff members.  The resources in this corporate library are used most often for center-based inservice education.

Classroom-based learning takes place regularly at each of our centers, among cluster groups of centers, and at our National Campus in Sioux Falls, SD.  These face-to-face learning opportunities encourage direct interaction among learners and facilitators as they learn skills from each other and challenge each other to grow.

Self-study courses are available in print or Web-based formats.  These courses allow employees to work at their own pace to delve more deeply into topics and expand their individual knowledge base.

As technology advances, additional methods for learning become more available.  Web conferencing is being used more frequently for meetings around the Society and for short learning sessions on some topics.  As web streaming becomes more readily available, that technology will further enhance the opportunities available for employees to access learning when they need it.
